Getting to know Kathryn
Get to know Kathryn, our summer intern!
1. Do you have allergies/asthma/eczema/immune disease? Elaborate!
I have multiple food allergies (Shellfish, Seafood, Sesame, Peanut, Tree Nut, Apple and Pear), which developed later in life. I was diagnosed with Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) followed by other Adult-Onset Food Allergies. Recently, my OAS diagnosed foods have developed into anaphylactic allergies.
2. Why did you choose to be a part of The Itch?
Having food allergies has become a part of my journey, has shaped my worldview and understanding of my purpose. Through my experiences of navigating conversations and organizational structures, I’ve identified the need for those with food allergies to be given the opportunity to share their story with the goal of creating a more inclusive society. Food Allergies have helped me find my voice and taught me the importance of both advocacy as well as being connected to resources in order to be an informed patient. I believe The Itch creates an empowering environment as it facilitates conversations and connection within the allergy community while making medical information accessible. Joining the team is an honor and I’m excited to learn & grow through this experience.
3. What's your day job?
I’m a student! I attend Baylor University and am pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work degree. I love that social work is a pathway which strives to improve social functioning and aids in understanding the reciprocal relationships between individuals, their communities and environments.
4. You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
Burgundy because such a crayon has a hint of tradition with a twist. It is a mixture of the primary color, red, and brown (red, orange, yellow).
5. What is something you like to do the old-fashioned way?
Knitting and crocheting
6. What do you bring with you everywhere you go?
Alongside my allergy kit, I always have my hammock! Hammocking is a great way to self-care because it enables me to relax while spending time outdoors watching a sunset, reading, or journaling.
7. What is your karaoke song?
Music like the Backstreet Boys or ABBA is my jam. Any other MAMMA MIA! fans out there?
8. What is your favorite thing to snack on?
The cereal, Mini Wheats! Ask my friends -- I’m known for being seen with a whole box when walking around campus.
9. What are you currently reading?
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. The version of Kwan’s novel was recently made into a movie which meant a lot to the East Asian American community due to it being the first movie in 25 years in Hollywood to have an all Asian-cast as well as Asian lead roles. I appreciated the movie’s role in bringing minority representation within the arts into the conversation so I thought I would check out the book.
10. Your top 3 podcasts.
I love podcasts! I listen to them when I cook or am working out. I recommend:
-That Sounds Fun by Annie F. Downs
-The Real Life Podcast by Jeff & Alyssa Bethke
-For the Love with Jen Hatmaker
